Inaugurated in 1996 by Anthony M. Pilaro in honor of the late Secretary of Commerce, the Ron Brown Scholarship is a college scholarship for Black/African American students. The scholarship is awarded to students who exhibit academic excellence, public service and leadership potentials.

Beneficiaries of the Ron Brown Scholarship will receive a cash prize of $40,000 to study in the college of their choice. The Ron Brown Scholarship Is for low-income African American high school seniors. Apart from the cash award, beneficiaries will also benefit from mentorship, empowerment and experience that will help them thrive academically and professionally.

The program will allow students access to experience, and mentoring with the aid of functional world-class technology. These will allow them to stay relevant in their workspace during and after the scholarship duration.

The program aims at catering for the lives of exceptionally brilliant and gifted African American Students committed to public service. The program will hone their morale and sharpen their leadership potentials, allowing them to thrive in their chosen career paths. The scholarship seeks to breed and nurture the next line of leaders who will implant positive impacts in their respective communities and the world at large.

The Ron Brown Scholarship awards its beneficiaries a scholarship worth up to $40,000, $10,000 for each academic year for four years. Beneficiaries can use the renewable scholarships to pursue a degree at any accredited four-year college or university to study any course of their choice within the United States.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Ron Brown Scholarship, candidates must meet the following requirements

•Candidate must be Black/African American.
•Candidates must exhibit outstanding academic and leadership potentials.
•Must have a nice record of community service.
•The scholarship is need-based, therefore candidates must be in financial need.
•Candidates must be United States citizens or be permanent residents of the United States.
•Applicants must be graduating high school seniors at the time of their application.
•Current college students are not eligible

Application Procedures

The application deadline for the Ron Brown Scholar Program is January 9 annually. Applicants are advised to stay ahead of the deadline to be considered for the scholarship.

To apply for the Ron Brown Scholar Program, candidates are to download and complete the PDF application form. The application form can be printed and completed by applicants. Candidates can submit the application using either of the following ways.

1) Candidates can print the application form and submit the application via mail. Applicants are to send their applications with their official transcript, and other application materials in a sealed envelope from their schools. Candidates can mail their applications to 485 Hillsdale Drive, Suite 206 | Charlottesville, VA 22901.

2) Candidates can also email their applications to Candidates are to include their official high school transcript and recommendation letters in one application. The applications should be submitted by your school/college counsellors to enable them to provide your transcript and letters in the application.

Shortlisted candidates will be notified by the Ron Brown Scholar Program office in March and winners will be announced on April 1 with their names posted on the Ron Brown Scholar Program website in May.

Beneficiaries can use the scholarship to cover the costs of tuition, fees, books, room and board, computers, health insurance, study abroad and other college-related expenses.
