The Morehead-Cain Scholarship is the first merit scholarship established in the United States at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It was originally named the Morehead Scholarship after its John Motley Morehead III and the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation, the benefactors of the scholarship.
The Morehead-Cain Scholarship provides a full four-year scholarship to students seeking to pursue higher education. The scholarship covers candidates’ tuition, books, room and board, per-semester stipend, and a fully-funded four summer experiences called the Morehead-Cain’s Summer Enrichment program and other educational-related expenses. The Morehead-Cain Scholarship is one of the United States’ most prestigious merit-based scholarships.
Inaugurated in 1951 by the Morehead Foundation, the Morehead-Cain Scholarship has helped numerous students pursue their goals, the Morehead-Cain Scholarship covers all expenses for four years of undergraduate study at UNC-Chapel Hill.
It also offers empowerment, mentorship, and capacity building in its distinctive summer enrichment program for students who want to gain real-life experience.
They will also learn how to thrive while working in groups. Candidates will work in teams to find solutions to problems facing North America. They will also be able to build their networks as they will work with organizations and gain real-life experience which will mark the beginning of a successful career.
In the Summer Enrichment Program, scholars are encouraged and empowered as they will receive financial support to hone and explore their best interests. The program allows beneficiaries to have access to the resources to pursue educational opportunities in their respective fields of study.

The Morehead-Cain scholarship has a rigorous selection process. Morehead-Cain Scholarship beneficiaries are selected based on their inspiring records of selflessness, cooperation, humility and leadership skills, community service, and also their best reactions in tough academic environments or scenarios.
Fifteen Morehead-Cain alumni have won Rhodes Scholarships to England’s Oxford University, one of the world’s most competitive and prestigious awards for graduate study. More notable alumni have also gone ahead to pursue some of the most prestigious positions in the world.
