The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is an undergraduate study scholarship that aims at helping students obtain undergraduate degrees with lessened financial burden.

Gilman Scholarships program is part of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) initiative to encourage students seeking to obtain their undergraduate degrees abroad with scholarships. The program is proudly sponsored by ECA and the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Successful students will be provided with funds worth up to $5,000 for tuition and fees each year.

The Gilman Scholarships are divided into three specific programs;

1) The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
2) The Gilman Undergraduate Research Awards program (UGRA)
3) The International Education Exchange Programs (IEEP)

To be eligible for Gilman Scholarships, applicants must meet the following criteria:

•Students should either be high school seniors or college students.
•High school seniors must have a minimum SAT score of 1200 or above or an ACT score of 24 or above.
•College students must be exceptionally brilliant. Students currently studying abroad are not eligible for the program except if their institutions are among the host institutions.

Gilman Scholarship is highly competitive therefore only eligible candidates will be chosen. Candidates who apply earlier stand a higher chance of being chosen.

There are also other varieties of scholarships candidates can apply for using the Gilman Program. These scholarships are;

1) The Gilman UGRAs, and
2) The International Education Exchange Program (IEEP) Awards.

The UGRAs is for students who want to carry out research abroad. The scholarship helps to fund projects and researches related to economic development in the United States and other countries.

The IEEP is for students seeking to access funding in a study abroad program for academic purposes.

Gilman Scholarship covers tuition, books, accommodation, visa fees, flight expenses and other expenses.

The Department of State provides $ 1 billion to fund all scholarships and grants for international students. Out of this $ 1 billion, up to $500 million is budgeted for graduate and undergraduate students through the Gilman Scholarship Program.

To participate in the Gilman Scholarship Program, candidates are to apply online. Applications will begin October 1st and end between December 1st and April 15th yearly. Candidates are advised to submit their applications on or before December 1st.

Candidates are to prepare their official transcript, two reference letters from teachers, university administrators, or employers, letters of recommendation, and an essay.
