Inaugurated in 1986, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was created to commemorate the good work of Senator Barry Goldwater, a soldier and statesman who served the country for 56 years.
With the aim of creating professionals in natural sciences, mathematics and engineering, to help improve the development of the country and the world at large, the Goldwater scholarship awards scholarships to college students pursuing a career in these fields.
Thousands of undergraduates have benefitted immensely from this scholarship program. Alumni of the scholarship program have gone ahead to obtain various prestigious positions in some of the world’s best organisations. There have also been instances where Goldwater Scholarship alumni were found conducting research to find cures to deadly diseases and promote development in various parts of the world.
To be considered for the Goldwater Scholarship, aspirants must meet the following conditions:
•Candidates must be enrolled to study a full-time eligible program at an accredited 2-4 year institution.
•Applicant must be a sophomore or Junior seeking to pursue a degree at an accredited institution.
•Must be pursuing a research career in natural science, mathematics and engineering.
•Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00.
•Must be U.S. citizen from one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia. Students from institutions in Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, and/or permanent residents of the United States are eligible.

Annually, beneficiaries of the Goldwater Scholarship are each awarded an amount worth up to $7,500. Sophomores will receive the award for up to 2 years, juniors will benefit from the scholarship for a year.
Candidates in the following fields of study are eligible to apply:
•Physics & Astronomy
Candidates should contact the Goldwater Scholarship Campus Representative (CR) and explain their desires to apply for the scholarship. Candidates are to then follow instructions given by the CR regarding the application process.
Candidates are advised to conduct individuals who can provide help and feedback throughout the application process.
Candidates can identify their school’s CR by checking the Campus Representative Locator. If candidates’ schools are not listed on the locator, candidates are to contact the Goldwater Help Center at 507-931-8335 or by email at email@example.com.
Before applying, you must complete the Student Profile and Goldwater Scholarship Pre-Application. When you have completed your pre-application, your student profile and pre-application will be emailed to your CR. Candidates are to contact their campus’ CR using the email address and/or phone number given in the locator if they don’t hear from the CR in a week. If efforts to contact your CR proves abortive, candidates should contact the Goldwater Help Center.
Candidates should keep in mind that the information entered in the pre-application will not be used as part of the selection process.
